Quotes and Sayings Are Great Motivators

By: Davoraldo

Famous people have their mottos and great companies have their slogans (e.g. "Just Do It" by Nike). All of them attempt to embed their life philosophy, fundamental beliefs and directions into one simple sentence. Why people do that? What is so compelling in having whole your life and way of thinking "zipped" into a single statement? Even great motivational speakers will call their audience and readers to try and define their purpose and goals in a single statement. Obviously, there is some power in powerful statements and sayings which show much more than those few words.

First of all, such single statements are easy to remember. It is much easier for people to remember their vision or purpose if it is stated in a simple sentence. This especially holds true for organizations and corporations. People will have a hard time remembering long and sophisticated mission or vision statements. In addition, they will not be bothered to learn them by heart. The direction, goals and values of the company can and should be expressed briefly, so employees and other stakeholders (customers, suppliers, creditors etc.) remember at all times where the company is headed. Even if you wake them up in the middle of the night. And you probably know what they say: "If you don't know where you are going, how can you expect to get there?"

Secondly, it takes only few seconds of your time to energize and remind yourself of your vision and purpose, when difficult times arise. You do not have to read the whole book. You do not have to look for it in your notepad. A short and simple statement of your mission, vision, purpose or goal (whatever you have set for yourself) easily comes to mind and can motivate you to push forward. If it is short, it takes only seconds to be recalled from your memory and makes an instant positive impact on your attitude and feelings.

This is why slogan, motto, vision and other powerful statements need to be short, simple and straightforward. In other words, it is short so it can be available when you will need it the most. When life presses you, your mind will search for something to hold on. A short but powerful statement that you have set for yourself will help you get up and continue your journey.

In addition to defining your own purpose, goals, values or vision of life in a single statement, one can find reading and remembering inspirational quotes and sayings very advantageous. Quotes can be short, but very powerful statements for they are much more than words only - they carry human experiences. Because they are easy to remember and are proven to be great motivating force, it is worthwhile to read and remember them on a regular basis.

Here are some examples:

"You gotta keep on keepin' on." Joe Dirt

"Never retreat. Never explain. Get it done and let them howl." Benjamin Jowett

"My life is my message." Mahatma Ghandi

"The man who is not dead still has a chance." Lebanese proverb

Now imagine when life becomes though, you can easily recall some of these statements, if you learn them by heart. They are short and simple, but demonstrate great motivational and inspirational power.

I have found on numerous occasions that learning specific quotes and sayings by heart has immensely benefited my life and boosted my progress toward set goals. By emerging in my conscious mind from time to time, motivational and inspirational quotes keep reminding me where I am, where I am going, and that I am capable enough to reach my goal. In other words, they motivate me to press forward.
